Welcome to my life as a Writer
IT'S PERHAPS BECAUSE OF MY OTHER GIFTS, that my talents as a writer didn't fully reveal themselves until later in life. And believe me, I'm more surprised about it then anyone. I've always used my big imagination in my art, but once I began putting those thoughts down on paper as words instead of pictures, I discovered that I might have a knack for this writing thing too.
In 1991 after I returned from home from Los Angeles to New York, I was asked by Debbie David (a friend, from the HIgh School of Art & Design, to write and illustrate, an 8 page sequential story, plus a full color back cover illustratio for her independent comic book she was gonna be publishing. Entitled Those Who Watch!!, the story was published later that year in Panorama # 1 by st. Eve Productions. Then while living in Jersey City, New Jersey, I began performing several shortwritten pieces of my own at The Cooper Gallery in Jersey City, in their then weekly Poetry events.
Shortly afterwards in 1992 I conceived and launched OffWorld magazine, a science fiction and fantasy 64 page comic book sized quarterly. During its way too short life span of 2 issues (sadly the 3rd never went to press, besides being the publisher, creator, and one of the artistic talents showcased in it, I also wrote items in it, including each edition's Editor's Note, Tribute section. Plus I also designed and wrote all the copy for all the promotional material.
I added produced playwright when somehow, in 2003, my first attempt at writing a play premiered at the Thirteenth Street Repertory Company, where at the time I was performing in their main stage production of 'Line'. The play which based on my life, started when people in the Rep., suggested I put down some of my stories I would tell them about my life.
What's wrong with this picture? I'm in it!, premiered in 2003 at The Thirteenth Street Repertory Company, in New York City. A year later a slightly revised version of the play was accepted and produced at the 2004 International Fringe Festival. Nd just in case any wonderful producer is reading this, yes, I've since adapted the play into a feature length screenplay, if anybody is interested.
Lastly, but maybe most importantly, in 2011, after discovering my comments on social media, namely Facebook, had become without exaggeration, practically novella's. I decided to launch Neilizms, my very own political blog. And after a decade, it's still an ongoing way for me to communicate my views in my very own style. To learn more, continue reading…
Political Commentary
NEILIZMS After spending most of life quietly on the sidelines, watching the ‘powers that be’ throw us practically into the ditch. As racism, and greed have quickly taken over the political landscape we live in (And that was before Trump). As I watch the rest of the world seemingly catching up to ours, I find it hard to believe ours is going backwards… that is what my political blog is about.
TO LEARN MORE: Right below, you will see several examples of what you will find on the blog, with links to each article. Also please check out the Neilizms page on this site to learn more, and/or go directly to the blog and start checking out some of the over 400 comentaries ready to read just for you at www.neilizms.com
Playwright
WHAT'S WRONG WITH PICTURE? I'M IN IT! So it turns out life is a stage. I had the great good fortune of being a member of the Thirteenth Street Repertory Company. While trying my best to learn the craft of acting, to entertain the audiences, by performing in plays, doing stand-up, telling my stories, just being myself, people at the Rep., suggested that I should jot my little stories down. Perhaps something good could come of it.
Those very stories, were developed into the play What’s wrong with this picture? I’m in it! A comedic look back at my life, my family, and some of the women I’ve been ‘lucky’ enough to have met in my life. Please check out the What's Wrong - Play page here in my website.
Editorial and Promotional
OFFWORLD MAGAZINE I conceived, art directed and designed, then launched OffWorld magazine, in my spare time, while I was freelancing full time at Ziff-Davis Publishing in 1993. Actually worked on their computers at night to work up the publication. The magazine combined wrtiers from the world's of Science Fiction & Fantasy fiction with the talented artists from the world of comic book & illustration. Basically I was the Publisher, Art Director, and Designer of every element of the magazine, including all of its promotional elements. Unfortunately the magazine didn't last, but I've always considered it my second college education. Showcased here are editioral and promotional items I wrote for the magazine. And yes all the copy in the promotioal elements are mine as well. All my years of paste-ups, mechanicals and production paid off.
Sequential
THOSE WHO WATCH!!! After I returned from Los Angeles to New York City in 1991, a friend, Debbie David, from High School, The HS of Art & Design contacted me and I was offered the chance to write and illustrate an 8 page story, plus the back cove art, for her new self published comic book, Panorama #1. I worked up my idea, wrote out the story, and decided that I would illustrate the story in oil paint. Since that was my medium of choice at the time. Turns out I was a few decades a head of my time. While i wasn't please how it printed, but for my first published comic work, not bad. Showcased here are scans of the printed comic book.
